Belgrave Headlines Saturday Program for Jazz Event

For the 24th annual Heart 'n' Soul of Jazz event, the Arts Council of Moore County presents veteran jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and the Marcus Belgrave Jazz Experience, Saturday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m. at the Carolina Hotel, Pinehurst.

Detroit's legendary jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave was born in Chester, Pa. He is best known for his longtime association and playing with Ray Charles. More recently, at the request of Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, he represented Detroit as part of the Lincoln Center Motor City Jazz Masters tribute, which Included Yusef Lateef, Curtis Fuller, Charles McPherson, and Ron Carter.

A true musical Renaissance man, there isn't much trumpeter, composer, arranger, educator, recording artist and producer Marcus Belgrave cannot boast is on his resume.

He is a professor of music at Oberlin University, and is the co-founder of the Jazz Studies Program at the Detroit Metro Arts Complex and the Jazz Development Workshop in Detroit.

His career as a player has intersected with an unparalleled variety of musicians across several musical generations, including Ray Charles (with whom he collaborated extensively), Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus, Clifford Brown, McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, and Joe Henderson. He has mentored and recorded with pianist Geri Allen, bassist Bob Hurst, alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and percussionist/composer Lawrence Williams. This list of musicians only scratches the surface of his many musical collaborations.

To round out this special Valentine's weekend, the John Pizzarelli Quartet and Broadway star Jessica Molaskey will perform Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. Tickets for Heart 'n' Soul of Jazz are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Pinehurst Resort at (910) 235-8415.

The $65 ticket (or $110 for both nights) includes a concert ticket, Meet the Artists Dessert Reception following the concert, and a chance for a fabulous door prize.

Pinehurst Resort is offering a pre-concert dinner in the Carolina Dining Room each night for $35 (tax and gratuity included), and a Valentine's Weekend special $189 per person per night rate, which includes overnight accommodations, gourmet dinner, overflowing breakfast buffet, bottle of champagne delivered to your room upon arrival, one ticket of admission to jazz concert per night's stay, and entrance to the Meet the Artists Dessert Reception following the performance.

The major sponsors of Heart 'n' Soul of Jazz are Pinehurst Resort, Progress Energy, American Airlines and Belk. Sponsors of the meet-the-artists reception are First Bank and Wachovia.

Lyne's Furniture Gallery will provide a $1,000 shopping spree as Friday night's door prize for a lucky audience member.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Arts Council of Moore County programs and services.
