Man Arrested in Shooting Facing Robbery Charges

A Candor man arrested for shooting into an occupied car in the parking lot of a Southern Pines convenience store has now been charged with three armed robberies.

Tory Kwamae Upchurch, 19, was arrested Jan. 6 by Southern Pines police and charged with a robbery that occurred at Mac's No. 7 Food Store on West Morganton Road. The incident happened Nov. 2, according to a press release.

Police also charged him with an armed robbery that took place Oct. 20 at the Kangaroo on U.S. 15-501.

Last week, Southern Pines police arrested Upchurch and charged him with attempted murder for firing several shots from a handgun into an occupied vehicle parked at M&S Market on West Pennsylvania Avenue. The vehicle was occupied by a woman and her infant child. He was arrested in the area after a foot pursuit.

In the Nov. 2 incident, Upchurch is accused of wielding a shotgun when he robbed Mac's No. 7 Food Store, which happened about 10:40 p.m. He also robbed a customer who was in the store that night, resulting in two robbery with a dangerous weapon charges being lodged by police. No injuries were reported.

Upchurch is also accused of using a handgun in the Kangaroo robbery, which happened about 1:20 a.m..

He was jailed with no bond.
