A new venue still couldn't hold all the people that wanted to watch Thursday night's fifth annual Moore County Spelling Bee for Literacy.
And 16 teams couldn't hold off The Pilot's "Printer's Devils" team of Steve Bouser, Pat Taylor and Darlene Stark, who claimed the championship of the fundraiser for the second time in the five years of the event.
The first four years of the competition were held at the Sunrise Theater in downtown Southern Pines, but it was moved to Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College this year because the theater couldn't hold the ever-growing fan base that turned out for the entertaining night of fun and intense competition.
More than 700 supporters of the 17 teams entered in the contest crowded the auditorium, and reports from the scene indicated that once again people had to be turned away. Even though admission was free, donations from the adoring and spirited crowd that packed the house ended up adding $17,000 to the coffers of the Moore County Literacy Council.
