The public is invited to the open business meeting of the Moore County Joint Nursing Home/Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee to be held at the Senior Enrichment Center on U.S. 15-501 Friday, March 6, at 10 a.m.
The guest speaker will be Trish Harris, associate professor in human services and psychology at Sandhills Community College. The topic will be "Memories Are Made of These."
Harris has been teaching at SCC for about 15 years. She has a bachelor's degree in family life studies from Eastern Michigan University and a master's degree in education and counseling from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her fall semester includes teaching a class in the gerontology program.
"I love learning about senior adults and opening my students' awareness of the value of the senior population in our culture," she says.
Harris designed a class project to offer supplemental learning tools for her students. Along with classroom instruction, students are also paired with long-term and rehabilitation residents. Students are able to add experience along with learning the technical aspects of the program.
The Community Advisory Committee members are appointed, volunteer advocates who visit residents living in long-term care facilities to see the general conditions under which residents are living and to assure that the residents' rights are respected.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would like more information on the committee, call Barbara Venditti at 910-295-4081.
