Locals Win at U.S. Kids Kickoff Event

Two area golfers won their age groups in the Jekyll Island Cup, the U.S. Kids Regional Golf Championship.
Joshua Martin of Pinehurst won the boys' 12-year-old division with a 36-hole total of 72-72--144.
August Joshua Beechler of Pinehurst won the Boys 8 year old division with an 18-hole total of 38-33--71.
This was the first event of the year on the U.S. Kids Golf schedule, a season-long series of tournaments that will culminate at the World Championship tournament in Pinehurst and Moore County in early August. A total of 390 young golfers competed in the event with the field consisting of boys and girls divisions.
On the boys' side junior golfers from the age of 6 and under through 14 competed against kids their own age. Girl's age groups consisted of 7 and under through 14.
The field of golfers include youngsters from 12 different contries, including Colombia, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
The U.S. Kids Golf 2009 schedule, now in its sixth year, includes local tours in 35 cities throughout America, World Championship Qualifiers, Regional Championships, the European Championship, the World Championship and the Teen World Championship.
"This was an extraordinary tournament with a terrific worldwide field," said Dewey Crim of U.S. Kids Golf.
"We have seen substantial growth in our events over the past six years, and we're very happy to be able to contribute to the current and future growth of the game."
