Pinehurst Garden Club's scholarship recipient, Charity Cox, has been selected to do her internship at a premier horticultural showplace, Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, Pa. Cox received a full scholarship from the PGC for the nationally recognized two-year program of landscape gardening at Sandhills Community College.
Cox speaks highly of the well-rounded hands-on curriculum she received at Sandhills from a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and caring staff that take a special interest in each student. Students work hard and take great pride in study, in their work at the greenhouses and in maintaining the grounds of the beautiful Sandhills Horticultural Gardens.
Cox will graduate this May from SCC and has said that the program has been the first step in fulfilling a dream to work at the North Carolina Zoo.
"The Pinehurst Garden Club wishes her the best in achieving this dream and is ready again to offer a full scholarship in landscaping gardening at Sandhills Community College to another deserving student," says a spokesman.
The new semester for the landscaping gardening program is due to start in August. The scholarships offered by PGC are mainly financed by the Pinehurst Garden Club's annual spring plant sale. This year the plant sale will take place April 25 in the Pinehurst Village Parking lot. The community support of this plant sale not only assists with this scholarship program, but also with many community beautification projects supported by the Pinehurst Garden Club.
The Pinehurst Garden Club has been in existence since 1981 and currently has five branches, each with 20 to 24 members.
The club meets jointly twice a year and each branch meets monthly the other seven months from September to May. Meetings offer an opportunity to hear interesting speakers, to meet socially and to go on day trips to local nurseries, gardens, the N.C. Zoo, etc.
All club members also have regular service opportunities from maintaining the Given Memorial Gardens and other planting in the village, hanging greens during the holidays, etc. Women who are residents of Pinehurst, and are interested in membership in the Pinehurst Garden Club, are welcome to contact Pat Clark, membership chairperson, at 295-3764.
