A traffic accident has shut down U.S. 1 southbound at Airtool Drive, which is near Ingersoll-Rand and the road that goes to the UPS distribution center.

The northbound lanes of U.S. 1 have been reduced to one lane open. According to a press release from the Southern Pines police, traffic is backed-up, but moving slowly. A tractor-trailer truck struck another vehicle in front of the Ingersoll-Rand plant.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and take alternate routes.

The accident is being investigated by officers with the Southern Pines Police Department and the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
