Sand Gnats Seek Players

The Sand Gnats baseball teams are looking for a few players to fill out their teams. The team needs players for its 45 and older, 35 and older and 21 and older teams.

The Sand Gnats are members of Senior Men's Baseball, a national organization. The Sand Gnats play in the 32-team Central North Carolina's Men's Baseball League.

The first practice is at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Pinebluff.

Softball Camp

A softball camp run by the Catawba College coaches and players will be held at the softball fields at Pinecrest High School on Sunday.

Sponsored by the Patriot softball team, the 1 p.m. through 5 p.m. session is open to girls from all schools ages 12 through the high school years. The cost is $40 per person.

Coach Nan Whitley's Catawba squad opened the 2009 season last Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Coker.

Basketball Team Tryouts

The Sandhills Cyclones Girls AAU organization will have tryouts for a new 10U fifth grade girls' basketball team Feb. 15 at Vass Gym. Tryouts will be from 2 to 4 p.m.

Adult Team Dodge Ball

The Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department is preparing for its annual Adult Team Dodge Ball league.

Adult games will be held at the Southern Pines Recreation Center during the month of March.

A captain's meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 17 at the Campbell House Office. All rules and regulations will be discussed then.

FCA Event

The Moore County FCA is sponsoring an Open Gym from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 19 at Pinecrest High School.

This event will have free pizza and also guest speakers Daniel Evans, Jamel Eugene and other N.C. State student athletes, as well as World Record Holder John Brookefield, who will do some feats of strength.

The event is open to all middle and high school students.

Adult Coed Flag Football

The Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department is holding registration for adult co-ed flag football. The league is open to men and women 16 and older. Deadline for registration is February 26. League will consist of a maximum of eight teams. Team registration fee will be based on number of teams in league. Games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning in March.

Youth In-Line Hockey Registration

The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registration for the 2009 Spring Youth In-Line Hockey League. This league is for youth ages 5 17, with age determined as of August 1, 2008.

All games and practices will be held at Rassie Wicker Park, beginning the weekend of March 7 and 8. Cost is $10 for Pinehurst residents, $20 for non-residents.

Players are required to have a helmet with protective mask, elbow pads, kneepads, shin guards, a mouthpiece, protective cup/pelvic protector, hockey gloves, hockey stick, and skates.

The schedule will be as follows: Ages 5-7 will play Sundays at 2 or 3 p.m. and practice every other Thursday at 6 p.m.

Ages 8-9 will play Wednesday evenings at 6 or 7 p.m. and practice Sunday afternoons at 4 or 5 p.m. Ages 10-11 will play Monday evenings at 6, 7 or 8 p.m. and practice Saturdays at 9, 10 or 11 a.m. Ages 12-13 will play Tuesday evenings at 6, 7 or 8 p.m. and practice Saturdays at 12, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 p.m. Ages 14 17 will play Thursday evenings at 7 or 8 p.m.

Youth Kickball

Come join Aberdeen's Spring Kickball league. This activity is available for children ages 4-14 who are looking to participate in a fun, safe, out of the ordinary sport. Practices will begin in April.

Fees are $12 for residents and $25 for non-residents. Individuals must reside within the city limits of Aberdeen to qualify for resident rates.

The registration deadline is March 12. If anyone is interested in coaching please contact Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department at 944-5902.

Lifeguard Training

The American Red Cross and FirstHealth will host lifeguard training classes at FirstHealth's Center for Health and Fitness. Classes include lifeguard training, CPR and first aid certifications. All course material provided. Participants must be at least 15 years old and be able to pass an introductory swim test.

Three sessions will be held April 15-18, May 1-3 and 8-9, and June 15-19. Cost is $150 for Center members and $175 for non-members.

CPR and Lifeguard recertifi-cation classes will also be held on May 17 and June 7. Cost: $25. For class times or more information, call 715-1800. Registration is required at least two days before first class.

Volunteer coaches are needed for all activities.

Open Gym

The Southern Pines Recreation Center gym is open each Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Now through March 1.

Participants must be at least 16 years old and must have a pass and an ID.

Passes are sold at Southern Pines Recreation Department, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
