Elise Middle School's sixth-graders recently participated in a Roman feast held in the media center.

Students had spent significant time researching the history of Pompeii, Italy. This included a library "scavenger hunt," led by Malcolm Dale, media coordinator, in which students utilized print and Internet resources to gather information on various aspects of life in this ancient city.

The cross-curriculum studies prepared the students to read "The Dog of Pompeii" for Beth Hinson's language arts classes. A field trip to The Discovery Place in Charlotte was another feature of this unit, where students were able to view authentic artifacts from Pompeii.

This exhibit, "A Day in Pompeii," was displayed only in four locations nationally.

The Roman feast saw students dressed in togas and ancient Roman soldier uniforms. Students ate fig cookies, cheese and crackers, black and green olives, mixed nuts and grapes which were complemented with light and dark grape juice.

A talent show followed. The sixth-grade band performed, led by teacher Betsy Evers, as well as a variety of singers, musicians, and dancers. A drawing for four Roman coins donated by Ned Spohn, sixth-grade math teacher, was held at the end of the celebration.

The lucky winners were Fernando Lopez, Jose Lara, Merlin Cabrera and Katelin Garner.

"This culminating activity demonstrates the culture's food, entertainment and clothing," said a spokesman. "Parents and grandparents were invited, and their attendance added so much to this event."
