O'Neal Boys, Girls Sweeps Conference Swim Meet

The O'Neal boys' and girls' swim teams capped a perfect regular season Friday during the Cape Fear Independent Conference Swim Meet Friday at O'Neal.

The Falcon girls defeated Cape Fear 145-130. Village Christian (107) and Fayetteville Christian (51) finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the boys' meet, O'Neal edged Village Christian, 159-152. Cape Fear finished third with 93 points and Fayetteville Christian was fourth with 44.

Standout performers for the girls included: The 200 Medley Relay team of Kendall Field, Molly-Craig Cordell, Blair Puleo and Whitney Cutler finished first in 2:16.39. The 200 Free Relay team of Cutler, Field, Puleo and Kaleigh Teschendorf finished first in 1:59.94, the 200 Free Relay of Culter, Field, Puleo and Teschendorf finished first in 1:59.44 and the 400 Free Relay team of Elle Brightbill, Cordell, Maggie Hakas and Teschendorf finished third in 5:10.87.

Cutler took first in the 200 Freestyle in 2:26.44 with Brightbill taking sixth in 2:54.86. Field was first in the 200 IM in 2:32.57, with Puleo (29.74) and Cordell (32.63) finishing second and fourth in the 50 Freestyle. Teschendorf (1:26.44) was third in the 100 Fly. Cutler (1:04.30) and Puleo finished first and third in the 100 Freestyle. Field, Courtney Hulst and Brightbill swept the top three places in the 500 freestyle. Teschendorf and Hulst finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 100 Backstroke, and Cordell and Hakas were fourth and fifth in the 100 Breaststroke.

For the boys, the 200 Medley Relay team of Austin Puleo, Mark Carey, Alex Zhang, Bennett Westling finished first in 1:55.92. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Brandt Davis, Puleo, Westling and Zhang finished first in 1:43.85 and the 400 Free Relay of Carey, Davis, Kevin Duffy and Eugene Zhang finished second in 4:06.54.

Alex Zhang (2:04.70) finished second in the 200 Freestyle, Eugne Zhang and Carey took second and third places respectively in the 200 IM with Jon Shudra and Nathaniel Putnam finishing ninth and 10th in the same event. Westling won the 50 Freestyle in 25.15 with Puleo (27.62) taking fourth.

Alex Zhang won the 100 Butterfly in 1:01.14 with Putnam (1:47.21) finishing eighth. Westling won the 100 Freestyle in 54.37 with Chris Waddell taking seventh in 1:05.89. Davis and Duffy went 1-2 in the 500 Freestyle in 5:57.07 and 6:03.84. Puleo (1:09.92) took second in the 100 backstroke with Eugene Zhang (1:10.96) third and Shudra (1:20.37), seventh. In the 100 breaststroke, Carey was first (1:10.44) and Chris Waddell (1:27.11) was sixth.

Owen Herbert and Beth Field, the head coach and assistant coach with O'Neal were voted Coaches of the Year in the conference.

Ten Falcons swimmers earned all-conference honors including: Whitney Cutler, Kendall Field, Blair Puleo, Molly-Craig Kordell, Kaleigh Teschendorf, Bennett Westling, Alex Zhang, Mark Carey, Brandt Davis and Austin Puleo.
