The Viking girls posted their largest margin of victory this seasonas they trounced the Harnett Central Trojans 67-38 in a Cape Fear Valley basketball conference road win. It was Union Pines' second consecutive CFV victory by more than 20 points.
The win was the second of the year against the Trojans (4-15, 1-10) and improved the Vikings to 16-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play.
After getting off to a disjointed start against the Trojans' 1-1-3 half-court zone, the Vikes took an 11-8 lead on a three-point shot by Alisha Mosley late in the first.
Mosley's basket spurred the offense, which scored 11 unanswered points in the second quarter to surge to a 29-11 advantage.
The run featured two 18-foot jumpers by freshman Crystal Hicks and deep bomb by Mosley that she soon followed by sinking a silky smooth runner in the lane.
Mosley led Union Pines with 10 first-half points, followed by sophomore guard Tyesha McLean's eight, as the Vikes led 31-14 at intermission.
The onslaught continued in the second half.
The Vikings began the third quarter on an 11-1 run with two baskets by Mosley, a
fade-away by senior captain Lindsey Wilborn and a steal and score by McLean. At period's end Union Pines led 49-24.
When Wilborn sank her fourth long jumper of the game, the Vike lead swelled to 57-28 with just less than six minutes remaining in the contest.
From there, Vike head coach John Lewkowicz rotated his reserves in and out for the final minutes. Senior captain Reyanna Torrence scored five of Union Pines' final 10 points as the Vikings cruised to a 29-point league win.
Mosley led the Vikes with 18 points, making eight of her 11 shot attempts.
McLean finished with 15 points, six assists, five steals and five rebounds.
Wilborn had 10 points and six steals. Hicks added eight points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Vikes.
Union Pines is in second place in the conference, one game ahead of the Overhills Lady Jaguars (8-3, 16-4).
The Vikes beat the Jags twice this season. Western Harnett (11-0, 21-0) remains in the top spot, two games in front of the Vikes.
The Vikings' next opponent, Triton (6-5, 10-9) is fourth in the conference.
The Vikes host the Triton tonight at 6:30 p.m. on Hall of Fame night.
Union Pines beat Triton 44-37 earlier this year.
