The Moore County Senior Enrichment Center hosts "Valentine Love Stories" from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the center at 8040 U.S. 15-51, two miles north of the Pinehurst Traffic Circle.
Inspired by the story of a Moore County couple who met later in life on e-Harmony, when he lived in New York and she lived in North Carolina, this Valentine's social gathering will be a time for couples, singles, widows and widowers to tell the stories of how they met that "special someone" many years ago -- or not so long ago.
Billy "Bag-O'Donuts" of WIOZ-AM will be the master of ceremonies, and a barbershop quartet from Moore County's Golf Capital Chorus will entertain with popular old-fashioned love songs. Refreshments will be served.
"Everyone is invited to attend and to share a story, or to come and listen," says a spokesman.
Call 215-0900 to RSVP.
Play Continues
The Sandbox Players presents the comic spoof, "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)," with performances Feb. 6-15, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at the Sunrise Theater in downtown Southern Pines.
All seats are general admission. Adult tickets are $15; student admission is $10.
Call 528-2134 for information.
Lecture Scheduled
The Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities hosts the first of a three-part lecture series at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, as Dawson Carr presents "The History of the 150-Year-Old Hatteras Lighthouse -- One of North Carolina's Most Famous Symbols -- and the Story of Moving It From the Dangers of the Sea Itself."
Lectures are free and open to the public.
For information, call 692-6261.
Singing Valentines
The Golf Capital Chorus is taking orders for its annual Singing Valentine Program.
"Order a serenade of love songs for your valentine, along with a rose and a box of candy, by calling Dick Curl at 215-9796, or e-mailing dickcurl@nc.rr.com," says a spokesman.
"The chorus has been surprising valentines for many years, and all proceeds go to local charities."
Quartets will be available on Feb. 13 and 14. The cost is $50.
Valentine's Day Concert
A Valentine's Day Concert at Sandhills Community College features the Sandhills Community College Jazz Band, directed by Tim Haley, and the Sandhills Community College Choir, directed by Frances Wilson.
Along with a variety of love songs and big band standards, the choir will perform several Civil War-era songs as part of the Abraham Lincoln 200th Birthday celebration taking place at the college during the month of February.
This free event begins Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Owens Auditorium on the campus of Sandhills Community College.
