Youth In-Line Hockey Registration

The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registration for the 2009 Spring Youth In-Line Hockey League. This league is for youth ages 5 17, with age determined as of August 1, 2008.

All games and practices will be held at Rassie Wicker Park, beginning the weekend of March 7 and 8. Cost is $10 for Pinehurst residents, $20 for non-residents.

Players are required to have a helmet with protective mask, elbow pads, kneepads, shin guards, a mouthpiece, protective cup/pelvic protector, hockey gloves, hockey stick, and skates.

The schedule will be as follows: Ages 5-7 will play Sundays at 2 or 3 p.m. and practice every other Thursday at 6 p.m. Ages 8-9 will play Wednesday evenings at 6 or 7 p.m. and practice Sunday afternoons at 4 or 5 p.m. Ages 10-11 will play Monday evenings at 6, 7, or 8 p.m. and practice Saturdays at 9, 10, or 11 a.m. Ages 12-13 will play Tuesday evenings at 6, 7, or 8 p.m. and practice Saturdays at 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 p.m. Ages 14 17 will play Thursday evenings at 7 or 8 p.m.

Registration forms are available at the Pinehurst Village Hall, or by visiting the Parks and Recreation page at www.villageofpinehurst.org. Anyone interested in coaching should indicate so on the registration form.Those interested in officiating, should contact Adam Crocker at (910) 295-2817.

Lifeguard Training

The American Red Cross and FirstHealth will host lifeguard training classes at FirstHealth's Center for Health and Fitness. Classes include lifeguard training, CPR and first aid certifications. All course material provided. Participants must be at least 15 years old and be able to pass an introductory swim test. Three sessions will be held April 15-18, May 1-3 and 8-9, and June 15-19. Cost is $150 for Center members and $175 for non-members.

CPR and Lifeguard recertification classes will also be held on May 17 and June 7. Cost: $25. For class times or more information, call 715-1800. Registration is required at least two days before first class.

Speed and Agility Camp

The Little Patriots 2009 Speed and Agility Clinics will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 2 to March 4 at Pinecrest High School.

Cost: $100 for entire clinic, or $10 per session. The camp is open to all students enrolled in grades 1-8 regardless of sport. The camp, sponsored by Sandhills Optimist Club, will be run by Pinecrest head football coach Chris Metzger, his staff and guest coaches.

Each student will receive instruction on different phases of athletics including eating habits, study habits, form running, and overall fitness.

Camp attire is T-shirts, shorts, athletic socks and running shoes.

Participants should meet at the John L. Williams Stadium each day and bring plenty of water.

Baseball Meeting

The Sand Gnats baseball group is looking for members for its three teams that compete in the North Carolina men's basketball league.

Teams compete in 21 and older, 32 and older and 42 and older age divisions.

Woof Woof Open Date Change

The Woof Woof Open, a golf benefit for Pooch Park in the Pines, will be held in June.

Originally scheduled for early February, organizers moved the date due to a forecast of unseasonably cold weather.

The event will be played June 27 at Longleaf and June 28 at The Pit. Shotgun start both days is 8:30 a.m.

Entry fee: $75 per round or $125 for two. Format: Best two balls of four. Teams: men, women and mixed. Tournament entry forms are available in local pro shops and online at www.poochparkinthe pines.com.

Soccer League Registration

Moore County Parks and Recreation is currently accepting applications for boys and girls ages 5-6 and 7-8 leagues. Ages as of Jan. 1, 2009.

Registration deadline is Feb. 13. Cost: $30.

All soccer sessions will be held at Hillcrest Park starting Saturday, Feb. 28.

Open Gym

The Southern Pines Recreation Center gym is open each Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Now through March 1.

Participants must be at least 16 years old and must have a pass and an ID.

Passes are sold at Southern Pines Recreation Department, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
