Six Winners for Host Pats at 32nd Annual Sweet XVI

The host team had six first-place winners and six runner-ups at the 32nd annual Sweet XVI wrestling tournament held at Pinecrest on Saturday.
Patriot sophomores Zac Lupien at 103 pounds and Dustin Roemer at 140 pounds, along with junior Nathan Frederique at 160 pounds and senior Zane Excell at 145 pounds, each won their respective weight classes at the varsity level, while junior Michael Lippincott at 119 pounds and freshman Cody Fitzgerald at 112 pounds won first-place finishes in junior varsity brackets.
Among the second-place varsity finishers were freshman Sawyer Bateman at 112 pounds, sophomore Phillip Mondi at 119 pounds, sophomore Garrett Bateman at 130 pounds, senior Grey Tampa at 135 pounds and senior Daniel Keith at 215 pounds. Junior Clem McKenzie took a third-place finish at 125 pounds at the varsity level.
Garrett Parks took a runner-up finish and Hawk George brought home a third-place finish, both at the J.V. level.
Lupien won his first match against Tyler Autrey from Cape Fear with a pin 30 seconds into the first period. He won his second match against Harley Silver of South View with a 7-1 decision, and his third match was a bye, giving him an undefeated record for the tournament.
Roemer won his first two matches with pins over Kendall Vandenbade of Gray's Creek and Daniel Munoz of East Montgomery, before his third match resulted in an 8-3 decision over John Thomas Cameron of South View.
In the match against Cameron, Roemer got his first takedown in the first period, only to have his opponent notch two points for a reversal. Roemer controlled the second period with a two-point reversal and a two-point near fall, then in the third period, notched a takedown for two points and was cautioned three times, giving his opponent one point to set the final margin.
Frederique won his first match against Anthony Comella of Gray's Creek with a pin at 1:33 in the first period. He had a bye for his second match and got another win with a pin at the 1:14-mark in the second period.
Excell won his first two matches with pins over Steven Parker of Gray's Creek and Levi Reid of South View. Excell's third match against Blake Norris of Cape Fear started with a scoreless first period. Norris notched a point for escaping in the second period before Excell won his first point with an escape. He then got two more points for a takedown in the third period to win by a 3-1 decision.
Fitzgerald won all four of his matches with pins, starting with a 46-second pin against Joshua Starling of Gray's Creek. He also pinned Michael Proctor of Orange in 59 seconds, Isaias Gomez of East Montgomery in 4:41 and Lucas Hall of Orange in 2:36.
Lippincott won his first match against teammate Chris Martin with an 8-5 decision and notched pins for his next two matches against Grant Hinson of East Montgomery and Steven Boudreaux of Gray's Creek. He won his last match with a 19-4 tech fall against Pedro Perez of Orange.
The fastest pin of the tournament trophy went to Garrison Matthews of Cape Fear with a pin in 18 seconds in the 152-pound weight class. Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament was awarded to Kamal Leak of South View, who wrestled in the varsity 130-pound weight class.
Pinecrest opens its Southeastern 4A Conference dual slate tonight hosting Purnell Swett at 6 p.m.
