Football season is always the shortest season. Look no further than the most well-known of sayings to explain that one -- time flies when you're having fun.
Many of our pick'em contest participants probably noticed there was no entry form in Sunday's paper. That's because the contest only runs from September through November, they tell me, so we have a winner.
With an average of more than 11 correct picks per week, Dick Maag, of Pinehurst, wins the $200 overall prize with 148 correct picks. That's good for a success rate over 70 percent.
The pintsized picking tandem of Noah, 8, and Aidan, 5, Lyons finish second with 146 correct picks, and Matt Robbins takes third at 145.
Last week was a crushing one on which to end. Just 23 percent of the entries picked 11 or more games correctly, and many more were in the eight to nine range.
The Sunday and Monday night games played heavily into the results, as did the college game. Only 15 percent of our participants correctly picked Alabama over Florida.
I picked 10 games correctly, and I'll take that total on a week like this. But it was still two points shy of the six entries that decided the weekly prizes with 12 correct picks each.
Steve Lassiter, of Pinehurst, took the weekly prize on the tiebreaker after predicting 40 of the 43 total points in Miami's upset of New England. Karen Weaver, of Southern Pines, and Dorothy Maag, of Pinehurst, tie for second place with each missing the Miami-New England total by five points.
