Patriots Sweep Red Springs in Hoops

The Pinecrest girls' and boys' basketball teams entertained their fans to the maximum with high energy performances against visiting Red Springs Tuesday evening.
Ashleigh McKenzie's third three of the first quarter staked the Patriot girls to a 15-3 lead. They expanded their advantage to 17 by halftime and rolled to a 58-26 victory.
McKenzie finished with four threes and a game-high 19 points, as the Patriots evened their record at 2-2. Also in double figures for the home team was freshman Janea Williams with 12 points.
Candice Seagraves added nine points and Kayla Herm contributed eight. Jennie Joy was credited with six assists. Red Springs dropped to 3-2 with the loss.
The Pinecrest boys improved to 4-0 with a 95-78 victory over Red Springs in a fast-paced night cap.
The Patriots never trailed in the game after taking a 3-2 lead on a basket by Faronte Drakeford. Drakeford and senior Daquan Towns led six players in double figures with 15 points each.
The Patriots extended a seven-point halftime lead to as many as 21 at 80-59 midway through the fourth period. Other scoring leaders for the winners were Marshall Smith and Antonio Jones both with 12, and Phillip Wallace and James Baldwin, each with 10. Wallace and Harron Carson were each credited with five assists.
The Red Devils, now 2-3, were led by Glenn Patterson Jr. with 30 points.
The Pinecrest girls and boys travel to Southern Lee on Thursday and Western Harnett on Friday.
