Sandhills CC head volleyball Alicia Hill saw many positives in Friday's home opener against Guilford Tech. Unfortunately one of them wasn't the final score.
Guilford Tech (1-1) defeated the Flyers, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 in Heins Gym, which is located in the Dempsey Student Center.
"Nobody wants to lose, " Hill said. "But but when you walk away and have more positives than negatives that's a good thing."
Bethany Neller turned in a solid all-around game for the Flyers. She led the team with three blocks, had five kills and four service aces.
Amber Otkin, one of two retuners from last year's team, led the Flyers with six killls. Alisha Ritter added a team-high 14 assists.
"I was really impressed with the way Bethany and Amber played," Hill said, "Especially when the were in tight situations and were able to put the ball down."
Hill said her team will have to work on its serving, service receiving and decsion-making as it readies for a pair of games Tuesday against Hiwassee CC (5:30 p.m.) and Davidson CC (7 p.m.) in a tri-match held at Davidson CC.
"In the third game we missed six serves and that cost us six points," Hill said. "In college volleyball, with rally scoring, when you give them (free) points and get down five, it's tough to come back."
Hill praised her team's hustle saying that some of the plays the Flyers made left her saying, "Wow."
"There were plays made by both sides that you can't teach," Hill said. "They were diving on the floor and made some good plays."
She added: "It's the little things we have to work on."
