SANDHILLS BEST BETS: Market Features Chefs From Elliott's Saturday

The Moore County Farmers Market Association welcomes chefs from Elliott's on Linden Saturday, Aug. 15, in Downtown Southern Pines.

The chefs will shop the market for the season's freshest ingredients and then prepare delicious dishes, providing free samples and recipes, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

"Come on out to the market for an enjoyable and tasty experience," says a spokesman.

The Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday morning through September at the corner of SE Broad Street and New York Avenue.

Orientation Meeting

Orientation for Miss Moore County 2010 will be Sunday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Aberdeen Lake Building. There are categories for young women ages 13 to 16 and from 17 to 24.

The pageant will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Sandhills Community College.

Film Screening

Sustainable Sandhills holds a free screening of the film, "The Greening of Southie," Thursday, Aug. 20, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Clement Dining Room of the Dempsey Student Center at Sandhills Community College.

A question-and-answer session will follow. "The Greening of Southie" is the story of a revolutionary green building, and the union teams that bring it to life. The story is set on the rugged streets of south Boston and the jobsite has its skeptics. "The Greening of Southie" is a story of bold ideas, new environmentalists and the future of the way we live.

Open Auditions

Sandbox Players, community theater for Moore County, will hold open auditions for its 2009-2010 season.

No preparation is necessary; no appointment is needed. Auditions will consist of reading from scripts. Auditions are from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday Aug. 17-18 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 340 S. Ridge St., Southern Pines. Call 528-2134 for more information.

Yard Sale

A yard sale and raffle charity event, sponsored by Roman Eagle Lodge 550 and Eastern Star Chapter 259, will be held from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Roman Eagle Lodge, one mile before Burney's Hardware on U.S. 15-501 just south of N.C. 211.

Raffle tickets are $5 each or three tickets for $10. Refresh-ments and drinks will be sold on site. Proceeds benefit the Oxford Home for Children and White Stone Masonic (Eastern Star) home.
