Professional Chad Gilligan of Aberdeen and amateurs Patrick Martin, Darren Rogers, and David Bowels representing Pinehurst No. 6 posted a 23-under-par 121 to win the Carolinas Section Championship and earn a berth in The 2009 McGladrey Team National Championship.
The Pinehurst team won by a single stroke and will compete among a 41-team field Oct. 26-28, in the National Championship at their home facility of Pinehurst Resort.
The team of professional Kent Shumate of Mount Airy Country Club with amateurs John Blanton, Mark Marion, and J.R. Lawson finished runner-up at 22-under-par 122, while professional Mike Brown along with amateurs Jason Williams, Justin Rivers, and Ryan Phillips from Green River Country Club finished third at -21. There were 32 teams in the Section Championship field.
The McGladrey Team Championship is the first grass-roots amateur best-ball championship managed by The PGA of America. PGA Professionals and amateurs compete for a combined purse of $30,000 at the Section Championship and $200,000 at the National Championship. Amateurs' purse compensation will be in the form of gift certificates.
The 164-player National Championship field will compete on three of Pinehurst's premier layouts, Nos. 2, 4 and 8.
The University Club team led by former Foxfire and Pinehurst professional Tom Graber tied for 10th at 130. Highland Country Club of Fayetteville tied for 15th with professional Jens Klemsche and amateurs Jay Johnson, Brian Canady and Scott Stapleton. Bobby Cooke led the Gates Four Country Club of Fayetteville team of Rich Barge, Alan Porter and Ralph Robertson to a tie for 19th at 135.
