Adult Co-Ed Softball League

Moore County Parks and Recreation is currently organizing an Adult Co-Ed Softball League to start play on Monday, Sept. 14. The entry fee for the league is $525 and must be paid by Friday, Aug. 28, by 5 p.m. at The Moore County Parks and Recreation office at 155 Hillcrest Park Lane in Carthage. The league will use ASA Softball rules as far as bats and balls are concerned. Games will be played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays. Anyone wishing to enter a team must pay there entry fee by the deadline. For more information contact the Recreation office at 910-947-2504.

Youth Flag Football League

Moore County Parks and Recreation has begun registrations for its youth flag football leagues of 6 to 8 years olds and 9 to 10 years olds. Age is determined as of Sept. 1. Cost is $30 per player. Registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 21. Persons wishing to sign up their child for one of these programs can do so at the Moore County Parks and Recreation office located at 155 Hillcrest Park Lane, Carthage or go online to www.moorecountyparksandrec.com and print off a form and mail or fax to MCPR (address and fax number on form). Proof of age must be presented to the Parks and Recreation Dept. to participate. Games will be played on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. PHS Soccer Teams Golf Fundraiser

The second annual Patriot Soccer Open Golf Tournament will be held on the beautiful Magnolia Course at Pinewild Country Club on Monday, Aug. 17. The captain's choice format will begin with breakfast and registration at 9 a.m. followed by a 9:30 shotgun start. Lunch will also be included. Funds raised will benefit both the girls' and boys' teams from Pinecrest. Hole sponsorships are available.

Cross Country Alumi Challenge

The Pinecrest Cross Country Team will host the first Alumni-Parent Challenge Run on Aug. 20. This will feature former runners and parents of current runners challenging the current team. For more information contact coach John Buchholz are jbuchholz@nc.rr.com.

Battle in the Carolinas

Racing action is returning to the Rockingham Speedway Aug. 12-15, with Bandoleros, Thunder Roadsters and Legends cars at the quarter-mile "Little Rock."

Races featuring Bandit, Young Gun, Outlaw, Young Lion, Semi-Pro, Pro, Master and Thunder Roadster classes begin each day with practice beginning at 9:30 a.m. with main events slated to roll off at noon and run until 3:30 p.m.

"We are looking forward to four great days of racing at the 'Little Rock,'" said Rockingham Speedway President Andy Hillenburg. "We are anticipating a good turnout for each of the classes and it should be a great event."

Pit access is $25 a day for all classes, except for the Pro and Master, which are $35 per day or $100 for the four-day event. General admission for spectators and camping is free.

Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department is accepting registrations for youth tackle football leagues. Boys and girls must be age 10 to 12 by Aug. 1, 2009, to be eligible. Pre-registration by 5 p.m. Aug. 27 is required. Players must weigh a minimum of 65 pounds. Cost: $15 for Southern Pines residents; $45 non-residents.

Fall Machine Pitch Baseball

Southern Pines is registering children ages 6 to 8 (age as of Aug. 1, 2009) for its fall machine pitch baseball league. Emphasis is on fundamentals, teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun. Must register by 5 p.m. Sept. 10. Fee: $10 for Southern Pines residents; $25 nonresidents. Forms also available at: www.southernpines. net/ Recreation/Athletics.aspx. Coaches will call with practice information. Games will be on Mondays and Wednesday evenings, with practices on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Volunteer coaches are needed.

Little Tike Indoor Soccer

This league is an introduction to the game of soccer. It is designed for kids 4 and 5 years old (age as of Aug. 1, 2009) to get in the gym and have a lot of fun and learn the basics of soccer. This League is co-sponsored with the Sandhills Celtic Soccer Club. Practices and games will be played at Southern Pines Recreation Center. Players must provide their own shin-guards and gym shoes, which are required to play. Registration is $10 for Southern Pines residents; $25 nonresidents. Registration due by 5 p.m. Sept. 3. Adult Flag-Football League

Southern Pines is taking registrations for a 7-on-7 adult flag football league. A captain's meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Train House in Southern Pines. Youth Golf Lessons

Southern Pines is accepting registrations for youth golf lessons. Fred Vansteen, Golf Professional at Knollwood Fairways will teach the fall lessons. Class emphasis is on basics of golf. Lessons are co-sponsored by Knollwood Fairways. Junior Golf clubs are available for check out at the Campbell House. Pre-registration is required at the recreation office in the Campbell House. Class size limited to 14. Lessons will be held Aug. 26 to Sept. 23 at Knollwood Fairways. Lessons for ages 7-9 will be from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Children ages 10-15 will attend from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Registration: Open until classes are full.

Baseball Teams Forming

A new 13U baseball team (must not turn 14 prior to May 1, 2010) is forming in the Aberdeen/Pinehurst/Southern Pines and surrounding area. Those interested in participation with an organization based on fundamentals and skill improvement in preparation for USSSA tournament play, please email contact information to sandhillsyouthbase ball@live.com.

Stevens Center Benefit Tournament

A benefit golf tournament for Stevens Center will be held Aug. 11 at Tobacco Road Golf Club. The tournament will feature 4-person teams and a captain's choice format. Cost is $65 and includes a cart, lunch and prizes.

Kiwanis Golf Tournament Set

The Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville will sponsor a Captain's Choice Golf Tournament on Sept. 17, at Cypress Lakes Golf Course with proceeds benefiting the Child Advocacy Center.

Check-in time is 11:30 a.m. to noon, followed by opening ceremonies. Play begins at 1 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded for a variety of scores including teams finishing in first, middle and last places.

Individuals and teams are welcome.

Registration is $100 for individual golfers or $350 for teams of four. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 each or $450 for a team of players with one hole sponsorship.

Girls' Volleyball Camp

Summer volleyball camps for girls in grades 6-8 will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 10-13 at FirstHealth Center for Health and Fitness.

Space is limited. Cost is $60 for FirstHealth members and $75 for nonmembers.

The camp will focus on serving, setting, passing and hitting.

Camp instructor is Tabitha Crider, a former Division I volleyball player at Penn State University with eight years' coaching experience.
