After going undefeated in league play, the Pinecrest boys' tennis squad captured all of the laurels at the Mid-Southeastern Conference individual championships that concluded at the Pinehurst Resort on Wednesday.

In an all-Patriot singles final, Dana Parziale defeated Will Davis 6-0, 6-2. In the doubles, Eric Parziale and Jordan Dew defeated teammates Will Harris and Ethan Kavanaugh 6-3, 6-0.

Dana Parziale earned conference player of the year honors and Davis, Eric Parziale, Dew, Harris and Kavanaugh joined him on the all-league team. Patriot coach Gail Deese shared the coach of the year award with Nelson James of Hoke County.

"It was a lot of hard work," Dew said of the tournament outcome. "This has to be the peak for us, having two people in singles and four people in the doubles -- an all-Pinecrest final."

All six players advance to the East 4-A Regional individual championships at Terry Sanford on Friday, May 8. Last year, Dana Parziale and Davis were runners-up in the doubles. Also ahead is a first-round state dual team match on Tuesday against an opponent still to be determined.

Dana Parziale is currently the ninth ranked player in the graduating class of 2010 in North Carolina.

A road warrior about every other weekend on the junior circuit, he recently finished second in the boys' 18-year-old and under division at a tournament held in Greensboro.

His toughest competition in the conference comes from teammate, Davis.

"He's a good player," Parziale said, "but we've played together for so long, I kind of know what to do with him -- how to beat him."

Along with Dana Parziale, Davis is one of a large crop of freshmen that joined the team two years ago to form the nucleus of this team.

"It helps a lot to play someone like Dana," he said. "He beats a whole lot of top players and he keeps me sharp."

The only Pinecrest loss in a 15-1 season was 7-2 in a non-conference match against New Hanover with Dana Parziale and his brother, Eric, picking up the singles wins. Scotland County was the only league team to defeat one of the Patriots' top-six players in singles.

An all-conference and all-region soccer player, Eric Parziale decided to come out for the tennis team for the first time as a senior. He and his brother both went undefeated in singles.

"I thought it was good because I knew he could help the team," Dana said of his brother's decision. "He's a real hard worker. I'm not surprised he became pretty good because a lot of stuff really comes naturally to him -- and tennis is just one of them."

Deese feels the team has a chance to do well in the duals this year, but with Eric Parziale being the only senior in the top six, thinks the prospects are even better for 2010.

"I think all of them are motivated to play," she said. "Dana made sure all of them played through the winter. That's what it takes -- to keep playing."
