The most successful season in North Moore girls' soccer continued Monday night.
The Mustangs tied a school mark for wins, earning their 10th of the season with a 2-0 blanking of West Montgomery.
Tonight the Mustangs (10-2-1, 8-0) will face another tough test when they take to the road for a game against Jordan Matthews. Both teams are ranked in the top 12 in the most recent state rankings.
Monday, Jazmin Medina broke the scoreless tie with 17 minutes remaining in the first half when she took a centering pass from Chloe Donaldson and beat the Warrior keeper.
Then with 18:30 left in the second half, North Moore struck again. Whitney Morgan took a deep throw in to Chloe Donaldson. Donaldson headed the ball backward to Sara Landsdowne at the far post. Sara got the ball to Jazmin Medina who scored her second goal of the night. Jazmin had a chance for the hat trick with time winding down only to miss kicking the ball from five yards.
"We played better in the second half than we did in the first. One thing that's definitely true about this team is they don't give up a lot of quality shots and they find ways to win," said Mustang head coach James Horwath.
Karla Lopez just missed her first goal of the season early in the first half. She beat the keeper one-on-one, but was denied the goal when a defender blocked her shot.
PHS Softball Faces Britt in Important Game
Friday night's softball game against Jack Britt could have a big impact on whether Pinecrest makes the state playoffs and where it will be seeded.
The 6 p.m. home game is also important because it will be Youth Night, Senior Night and Kay Yow Memorial Fund Night.
Any youth that plays recreation or traveling ball, and comes to the game wearing their uniform jersey, will be admitted for free. All the money the team makes from T-shirt sales, the concession stand and donations will go to the Kay Yow Memorial Cancer Fund from the softball team and Key Club. Spectators are encouraged to come to the game wearing pink in support of the Patriots and the fundraising effort.
Coach Paul Goins squad went up against the Mid-Southeastern Conference leaders last week, losing 5-0 to second place Scotland County on Tuesday and 2-1 to first place Richmond Senior on Friday. Sitting in fourth place coming into this week with a 4-5 league record, the Patriots were scheduled to play a Hoke County team on Tuesday that is right on their heels at 3-5.
The Patriots, 6-11overall, also have their sights set on overtaking Jack Britt, 5-3, for third place in the conference.
Last Friday night's home game against Richmond was a pitching duel between the Pats' Keely Robinson and the Raiders' Maggie Mckenzie. The visitors reached Robinson for only four hits, but defeated the Patriots 2-1 to improve to 9-0 in the league.
Robinson struck out eight batters and walked one. McKenzie fanned nine batters. The only hit she allowed was by Felicia Wood. The Patriot run came after Lindsay Parkin reached base on a passed ball after striking out. She advanced to third on an errant throw by the Raider catcher and scored on an infield ground out by Olivia Cioccalanti.
Pinecrest Soccer Beats Hoke, Faces Jack Britt in Conference Showdown
Bailey Pages scored a goal in the first of two 10-minute overtime periods to give the Pinecrest girls' soccer team a 1-0 victory at Hoke County, Monday evening.
The Patriots were frustrated throughout by intense man-to-man marking by the Bucks in the attacking half of the field. They got plenty of shot attempts, but were unable to connect until Pages penetrated the penalty area and powered a shot past the Buck goalkkeeper after almost 90 minutes of play.
"The girls got to see a different style, which is good," Patriot coach Todd Abbey said of the Hoke defense that tracked players where ever they went. "It was interesting to coach against."
On the Patriot goal, the Pats' Claire Epling vacated an area near the Hoke goal taking the marking defender with her. Pages moved into the space with the ball and connected with the game-winner.
Pinecrest takes a 10-0 conference and 12-3 overall record into this evening's home match against Jack Britt, 10-1 and 12-5-1.
"It's the second time around and I'm sure they'll give us a different look too," Abbey said. "Jack Britt gave us a great game the last time. In order to win the conference, this is the game."
The Patriots have won 27 conference matches in a row since the Buccaneers defeated them 2-1 at home on April 23, 2007. Hoke is 6-5 in the conference after the loss.
