Aberdeen Home and Garden Club
The April 21 meeting of the Aberdeen Home and Garden Club was held at the home of Doris Moon at Middleton Place in Southern Pines. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Frances Marks, who led in the club collect.
Evelyn Taylor, program chairman for April, introduced Andy Honeycutt, community relations manager for Progress Energy, who presented an informative program on Green Energy and current issues concerning the conservation of electrical power. He emphasized the importance of conserving energy through use of timers on appliances such as hot water heaters, using compact fluorescent light bulbs, and the time of use program.
Following the program, strawberry cheesecake, nuts, and tea were served by the hostess.
During the business meeting, the garden club awards for the month were announced: The Goodwin residence at 609 Bethesda Avenue, the residence at 909 Devonshire, the Reynolds residence, 1019 Devonshire, at Page Memorial United Methodist Church, and at the Lockey residence, 1014 Bion Butler Road.
The May meeting will be a President's Tea to be held at the Postmaster's House in Aberdeen.
Ladies Special Events
Jim Dodson, whose next book, "A Son of the Game," will be released this month, will be the speaker for this month's Ladies Special Event
Dodson is currently writer-in-residence for The Pilot, and editor of PineStraw Magazine in Southern Pines. His regular Sunday column was recently awarded top prize by the North Carolina Press Association. Over a 25-year golf-writing career, his writing has won more than a dozen awards from the Golf Writers of America and other industry organizations. He recently served as the distinguished Charles Rubin Writer-in-Residence at Hollins University in Virginia, and for 20 years was a contributing editor and regular columnist for Golf Magazine and several other publications.
His awards are many, and his work has appeared in over 50 magazines and newspapers worldwide. He is a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and the official historian of Seminole Golf Club.
Included in his best-selling books are "Final Rounds," "The Dewsweepers," "Beautiful Madness," "The Road to Somewhere," "Faithful Travelers," "A Golfer's Life," with Arnold Palmer, and "Ben Hogan: An American Life," which won the USGA International Book Award in 2005. In 2008, he was a featured commentator in the award-winning HBO documentary "Back Nine at Cherry Hills."
Dodson is currently at work on a book about Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, and the creation of the modern age of golf.

Coin Club
The Moore Numismatic Association Coin Club meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Aberdeen Fire Station, U.S. 1.
Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month and consist of coin news and events, member presentations and discussions, and a coin raffle and auction.
Club membership is $15 per year, $6 for those 17 and under.

Kennel Club
The Moore County Kennel Club will be meeting Tuesday, May 5, at the Table on the Green. The restaurant is located at Midland Country Club on Midland Road in Pinehurst. The members usually arrive around 6 p.m. for dinner and/or chats with fellow members; the actual meeting begins at 7 p.m.
The club will have a program at this meeting. Dr. Katherine Settle will speak on Canine Theriogenology (reproductive medicine). Settle is an expert on canine reproductive medicine and will give the members a general overview on a vital subject for any breeder.
The club will also be discussing its up and coming AKC Summer Agility Trials to be held in June. The trials will be held at Bon-Clyde Learning Center in Sanford, Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7. In the last few years, the club's Agility Trials have gradually grown to be very well received and prestigious events. The facility at Bon-Clyde lends itself well to an exciting, active event, and the club maintains an excellent experience for all entrants. MCKC has as its aim to help locally in Moore County the various canine, vet tech students, and a variety of animal related projects. They do this with their donations to various animal organizations, vet-tech scholarships, taking puppies to other states where they find homes, and many other worthy projects.

S.P. Business Association
Members of the Southern Pines Business Association held their March meeting at the Southern Pines Civic Club. Greg Zywocinski, President of the organization, welcomed members to the morning meeting.
Ed Gideon, ActionCOACH, spoke on marketing your business in today's economy. Gideon presented creative ways of marketing from networking to media advertising, reinventing your business for today's needs and the importance of customer service.
Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month and often include guest speakers. Founded in 1979 by a small group of dedicated merchants, the Southern Pines Business Association is comprised of retail, professional and service oriented businesses. The group celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
The Southern Pines Business Association maintains local signage in the downtown area and also produces a brochure map that is distributed throughout the community. Members are listed on the downtown signage, brochure maps and the Association's Web site,www.southernpines.biz. The Association is responsible for several local events, such as Springfest and the recent holiday activities in downtown Southern Pines.

Pointing Breeds
The Sandhills Pointing Breeds Club will hold its last meeting of the season at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at the club grounds. All members are invited to attend, and light refreshments will be provided. The club's meeting house is located at 3280 Jackson Springs Road, Jackson Springs.
The SPBC is open to anyone interested in the pointing dog breeds. Dog ownership is not required.

S.P. Civic Club
The Southern Pines Civic Club's annual May salad luncheon will be at noon, Monday, May 4, followed by installation of officers for the 2009-2010 year.
Visitors are welcome. The club's May meeting is traditionally the final one for general membership and a time for fellowship. Members attending either bring a salad large enough for 10 servings, or pay $7 at the door. Meat, pasta, vegetable, and fruit salads are all needed.
New memberships and membership renewals for the coming year at $30 are also accepted, starting at this meeting. For information about SPCC memberships and activities, call Dorothy Shankle at 692-3821.
