A moped driver was injured in a wreck on U.S. 1 South Monday morning.

The wreck happened near the entrance to McDonald's Brothers at about 10:30 a.m. when a 2005 Chevrolet SUV driven by William Frank Vaughn hit the moped being driven by Chauncey Darryl Murray, according to Trooper D.P. Barber of the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Murray, 53, who had a Sanford address, was transported by helicopter to UNC Hospitals. The helicopter landed in the parking lot of Hyland Hills Resort to airlift Murray to the hospital. A spokesperson for UNC Hospitals said Tuesday that Murray was in critical, but stable condition.

Vaughn told Trooper Barber that a truck in front of him swerved, and when Vaughn swerved he came up on the moped driven by Murray and hit him in the back. Murray was lifted onto the hood of the SUV, eventually coming to rest behind the vehicle after Vaughn stopped. The moped ended up pinned under the front of the SUV.

Vaughn, 49, of Vass, was charged with failure to reduce speed, according to Barber.
