SPORTS BRIEFS: Moore To Play At Guilford College

Union Pines' senior Zachary Moore has committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Guilford College, according to a release from the school. Moore lettered three seasons at Union Pines High School for coach Jason Furrie.
The 6-0, 203-pound linebacker won the Tom Eldridge Award his senior year as the team's most outstanding player. The two-year team captain recorded 103 tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions as a senior. He also lettered in basketball and track.
Moore considered Yale University, Georgetown University, Davidson College and Methodist before choosing Guilford.
Guilford concluded the 2008 season with a 4-6 overall record, 1-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
UP Softball, Baseball Suffer Losses
The softball and baseball teams from Southern Lee defeated Union Pines Tuesday night. The Cavalier softball team rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the seventh inning to post a 5-4 win. The Vikes are 4-13 overall and 2-8 in Cape Fear Valley conference play.
The Cavalier baseball team pounded the Vikes, 14-3. Terry Burge had an RBI single, while Nevin Wilson drove in two runs with a sizzling single down the third base line.
The loss was the Vike baseball teams' fifth in a row, and second straight defeat in CFV competition, as Union Pines is now 5-12 overall and 3-7 in conference.
