Mustangs Rally Past Jets

After back-to-back conference losses, the North Moore baseball team recaptured some momentum with a come-from-behind win Friday night.

Senior Dustin Martin's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Mustangs a 7-6 win over Yadkin Valley Conference leader Jordan Matthews.

"This was a huge win for us," Mustang head coach Brandon Reynolds said. "Obviously our confidence was a little fragile coming into tonight's game."

The Mustangs looked confident early. After falling behind 2-0, the Mustangs scored five unanswered to take a 5-2 lead. The final two runs both scored on a fourth inning single by Tyler Wallace.

The lead was 5-3 after a Paul Drumheller RBI single in the fifth, which seemed safe in the hands of freshman pitcher Rider Maness.

Maness, who struck out a dozen, allowed two runs in the first, but cruised into the sixth. After back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning, Maness allowed a double to Lane Bray and then issued back-to-back walks to Josh Harris and Desmond Cheek.

Levi Morris relieved Maness and got Drumheller to hit a fly ball to left-center for what appeared to be the final out of the inning, but left fielder Xavier Scotten and center fielder John Spivey collided. The ball hit Spivey's glove and fell to the ground allowing three runs to score.

Trailing 6-5 in the sixth, it was the Mustangs turn to rally. Lyle Barnett and Spivey drew one-out walks off Bray. A fielder's choice ground out by Scotten put runner at first and third with two outs. Scotten moved to second on a wild pitch and Wallace drew a walk to load the bases for Martin.

Martin hit the first pitch he saw from Bray into shallow center for what appeared to be a routine pop out, but Cheek backed up when the ball came off the bat and was unable to make a diving catch. Barnett and Scotten both scored, to give the Mustangs a 7-6 lead.

"That is the one thing I love about this team," Reynolds said, "We don't drop our heads, We keep playing. Tonight was a big step for us."

Morris allowed a lead-off single to start the seventh, but then got two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.

Maness allowed two first-inning runs, but was able to keep the Jets offense in check into the sixth inning thanks to 12 strikeouts.

Josh Harris got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a two-run double off Maness.

The Mustangs answered in the bottom of the inning when Maness tripled in two runs off of Cheek.

Jon Henley broke the tie in the third with an RBI ground out.
