John Harold Shields, 85, of Pinehurst, passed away Friday, March 6, 2009. Mary Anne Shields, his wife of 65 years, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009.

A celebration of life for Mr. and Mrs. Shields will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday April 29, at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines, with the Rev. David L. Hicks officiating.

Mr. Shields was an Air Force veteran of World War II, later receiving a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a nuclear physicist. He was employed as a defense contractor for the U.S. government. In his retirement, he enjoyed watching golf and tennis on television, as well as spending time with his family. There was not a person he met who did not like him.

Mary Anne Shields graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in Massachusetts, and was very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Shields owned her own business, making clothes for ice skaters. She also enjoyed collecting genealogy research for family and friends. Mrs. Shields was an excellent cook and homemaker.

The Shields are survived by their daughter, Mary Jo and husband, Michael LeFebvre; two grandsons, Jimmy LeFebvre, and Jason LeFebvre and wife, Tara; siblings, Connie and Sprite Barbee, Gary and Kathy Lilley, Jim Lilley, and six nephews and nieces.
