It took an extra hole, but Jarrett Grimes, of Columbia, S.C., is the Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion.

Grimes, who either held or was tied for the lead all three days in the Carolinas Golf Association championship being played at Treyburn Country Club in Durham, rolled in a five-foot birdie putt to outlast Mark Slawter, of Wake Forest.

Grimes held a two-stroke lead over Slawter after two rounds, and was ahead by five shots after the 13th hole. But Slawter, a former professional who regained his amateur status in 2007, made birdies on 14, 16, 17 and 18 to gain a tie at 211 and force the playoff.

Uly Grissette, of Clemmons, the 2008 North Carolina Mid-Amateur champion, made a late run by posting the low round of the event with a closing 67 to stand alone in third place at 215.

The championship is open to male golfers, age 30 and over, with a maximum handicap index of 5.4.

Paul Simson, of Raleigh, tied for fourth with 216.

Sherrill Britt, of West End, a four-time Moore County Amateur champion, tied for ninth at 221 with rounds of 69-77-75. Keith Harris, of Southern Pines, tied for 16th with 225. David Neveu, of Pinehurst, tied for 19th with 226. Jason Cox, of West End, tied for 25th at 228. Frank McBrayer, of West End, tied for 38th at 233.

Pine Needles: The golf shop, closed for repairs following a fire last month, has reopened at Pine Needles, and the resort is offering special rates to golfers on Mondays during the month of May.

During May, golfers can play the classic Donald Ross course each Monday for $100, a rate that includes lunch in the resort's popular "In The Rough" lounge, cart and a golf hat.

"This is a great value," said Golf Director Graham Gilmore, "and it's one way we want to say thanks to our many longtime friends and to offer an incentive to newcomers who haven't played this Ross masterpiece."

The Pine Needles course on Midland Road was the site of three U.S. Women's Open Championships, a USGA Senior Open, a USGA Junior championship and numerous local tournaments. It was opened in 1927.

Women's Senior: The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct its sixth annual North Carolina Women's Senior Championship at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is the fourth CGA major championship hosted by The Club at Irish Creek, which was known as Kannapolis Country Club prior to a redesign by Davis Love III in 2007. The club previously hosted the 1999 N.C. Mid-Amateur, the 2004 Carolinas Pro-Amateur and the 2008 Carolinas-Virginias Junior Boys Team Matches.

The par-72 layout will play at 5,574 yards for the 20 golfers in the championship division and at 5,146 for the 39 golfers in the tournament tee division.

Among the 59 players entered in this year's championship for women golfers ages 50 and over is defending champion Patty Moore, of Charlotte, who took both Carolinas Woman Player of the Year and Senior Woman Player of the Year honors for 2008.

Melissa Sage, of Charlotte, the 2006 winner and 2008 runner-up, is back, along with 2005 champion Dianne Yelovich, of Pinehurst, who tied for third a year ago at Lake Hickory Country Club in Hickory.

In 2008, Moore shot 71-72 -- 143 to win by a comfortable six strokes over Sage and by 11 over third place Yelovich and Kathy Binkley, of Cornelius.

Egolf Tour: Kevin Miller of Clayton won his second eGolf Amateur Tour event in as many starts, claiming a sudden-death playoff at Chapel Ridge Golf Club in Pittsboro over Park Williams of Kernersville.

They tied at 75 in regulation play in the championship flight.

Harris Teeter: It took 28 holes for Brent Massey to win the championship flight of the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur event held at Chapel Ridge Golf Club, but he finally ended the marathon on the 10th playoff hole with a par.

Massey, of Raleigh, and Eric Ardery, of Durham, were tied after regulation play at 74, and they matched scores with seven pars and two bogeys before the playoff ended.

Ken Eichele, of Pinehurst, tied for fifth with 76.

Pro-Official: Chris Hensler and Ken McLeod, of The Point Lake and Golf Club, teamed for a 68 to win a three-way playoff in the Carolinas PGA Club Car Pro-Official Championship held at Charlotte Country Club.

T.J. Bridges and Jerry Highsmith, of Greensboro Country Club, and Cory McEwen and Jerry Gaines, of Village Greens Golf Club, tied for second.

Jamie Johnson and James Watkins, of National Golf Club, tied for 24th with 72. Chad Gilligan and Gary Denman, of Pinehurst No. 8, tied for 29th with 73, and Jeff Dotson and Bob Klug, of the Country Club of North Carolina, tied for 48th with 77.
