Susan Fairchild Kuiken, 78, of Pinehurst, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at The Inn at Quail Haven in Pinehurst.

A memorial service will be held at Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Rod Stone officiating.

Mrs. Kuiken was born June 30, 1930, to the late John and Gladys Geishen in Hackensack, N.J. She graduated from Tenafly High School, class of 1948. Employed as a secretary for Exxon Oil Corporation, she worked in the Empire State Building in New York City. She married Russel A. Kuiken on October 12, 1956, settling in Fair Lawn, N.J., and later moved to Wyckoff. After marriage, Mrs. Kuiken worked as a temp secretary while raising three children and later worked for a legal firm. She enjoyed gardening and had a tremendous love for the game of golf.

In New Jersey, she was a member of Saddle River Golf Club and Upper Montclair Country Club of Montclair. She was Women's Club Champion at Upper Montclair eight times, belonged to Women's New Jersey Golf Association, the Women's Metropolitan Golf Association and the Women's Garden State Golf Association.

Retiring and moving to Pinehurst in 1991, she met and made many wonderful friends. She was a member of Pinehurst Country Club, The Silver Foils, Women's Golf Association, and former member of N.C. Senior Women's Golf Association.

Mrs. Kuiken volunteered at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Interfaith Food Pantry in Aberdeen, the Given Book Shop in Olmsted Village, and at Aberdeen Elementary School as a reading tutor. She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church of Pinehurst and a volunteer for the Family Promise Program.

Mrs. Kuiken was predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Russel Arthur Kuiken.

She is survived by two sons, William P. Kuiken and wife, Sharon, of West Windsor, Vt., and Russell D. Kuiken, of California; a daughter, Sharon Vandereems, of Florida; a brother, John Geishen and wife, Alice, of Chesterfield, Mass.; six grandchildren, Adam Kuiken, of Derry, N.H., Rachel Kuiken, of West Windsor, Vt., Russell, Joshua and Richard Vandereems, of Florida, Russell Kuiken, of California; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces.
