Smith Offers Auditions for Musicians

Dr. Reid Smith, a native of Rockingham, has been invited to join the faculty of the 2009 Gabala Music Festival, Aug. 11-23 in Gabala City, Azerbaijan.
The faculty roster of 17 members from around the world is stellar. An international competition will award over $20,000 of prizes, and many students will be given opportunities to perform in New York and European cities as well.
Smith was the organist at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines for five years before going to college and has many friends in this area.
Smith will be auditioning interested students in May and June.
Applicants must prepare a memorized solo classical program including several etudes and pieces from the baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary periods. Students may apply in piano, violin, or cello. Applicants may submit a CD or a DVD to Smith. Recordings must be received by June 1. Auditions in the Raleigh area will be held May 15-17 between 2 and 6 p.m. by contacting jhreske@aol.com or calling (919) 557-0639.
Smith received his bachelor's degree in music from Boston University, his master's degree in piano performance at The Juilliard School, continued his studies at the Vienna Hocheshule fur Musik under a Rotary International Graduate Fellowship, and earned his doctorate from the University of Minnesota.
This festival is sure to be a major event for all students who attend. In addition to many performance opportunities, students receive private lessons and master classes. Observers of all ages and parents are welcome. General information is available at the Web site : www.GilanPianos.com.
