Celebrate Mother's Day by attending a concert of the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra Sunday, May 10, at 2 p.m. This performance will be at the Owens Auditorium on the campus of Sandhills Community College located at 3395 Airport Road in Pinehurst.
The featured soloist is Mallory Hayes, winner of the 2008 Moore Philharmonic Orchestra Solo Competition. No tickets are required, but tax-deductible donations are always welcome, says a spokesman.
The program will include: "Canon in D Major," by Johann Pachelbel (arr. P. Gordon); "Bolero," by Maurice Ravel (arr. R. Branga); "Symphony No. 9 in D minor (4th movement)," by Ludwig van Beethoven (arr. M. Hopkins); "Overture to the Marriage of Figaro," by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (arr. M. Isaac); "Colonel Bogey March," by Kenneth Alford; "Selections from 'Porgy and Bess,'" by George Gershwin (arr. R. Bennett); "Selections from 'The Sound of Music'" by Rodgers and Hammerstein (arr. F. Since 2005, the orchestra has served the Sandhills community, supporting music appreciation and education. It provides an outlet for approximately 50 volunteer musicians to perform varied programs of orchestral literature. Members include adults and talented college, high and middle school students. It is a nonprofit 501c(3) organization and relies entirely on individual and business contributions to cover general and operating expenses and to support the Spring Development Scholarship Fund. The Orchestra is a member of the Moore County Arts Council and the Moore County Chamber of Commerce.
