Temple Theatre's production of "Little Women: The Musical" is simply wonderful in every way.
The actors, their voices, the costumes, the sets, plus a great script combine for a most enjoyable experience.
Condensing Louisa May Alcott's story down to a play of just over two hours couldn't have been easy for Allen Knee. The songs, with lyrics by Mindi Dickestein and music by Jason Howard, help tell the story perfectly.
And I don't think I could say enough good things about this cast.
Jae Boley is superb as the tomboyish Jo; Molly Griggs is the perfect Amy; Katherine Anderson sets the right tone as oldest sister, Meg; and Anne Butler is sweet (but not sickeningly so) as Beth.
Lynda Clark, who was recently seen in the Moore OnStage production of "Master Class," as Maria Callas, is wonderful as Aunt March, and Cassandra Vallery, also a veteran of Moore OnStage productions, performed her role as Marmee with just the right touch.
Sean Powell, as the earnest Laurie, who makes himself part of the March family, holds his own against the young women, and Peter Tamm portrays Mr. Lawrence, Laurie's somewhat gruff grandfather with the heart of gold, with a light touch. Rob DuPont brings a certain air to the role of Mr. Brooke, Laurie's tutor (and eventually Meg's husband).
But I do have to say I hold a special place in my heart for Ken Griggs in the role of Professor Bhaer. He was absolutely wonderful, speaking and singing with an accent the entire time. I really felt the connection between his character and that of Jo.
This is a production that the entire family can enjoy.
A special note for mothers and their young daughters: Sunday, April 26, following the afternoon matinee, there will be a "Little Women" Mother-Daughter Tea.
There will be a photo opportunity with the cast on the set, and then tea with the March sisters. The cost for the tea is $10 for mothers, and $5 for daughters. These are also sold through the box office, and funds raised benefit the theater.
The production continues through Sunday, May 3. For information, call (919) 774-4155 or visit templeshows.com.
