Several Moore County law enforcement agencies participated in a "Booze It and Lose It" checkpoint Friday night near the Traffic Circle in Pinehurst.
Police departments from Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Southern Pines, Carthage, Whispering Pines, and Pinebluff, as well as the Moore County's Sheriff's Office, took part in the DWI checkpoint set up on both directions of U.S. 15-501 south of the Traffic Circle. The roadblock, set up from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., resulted in two drivers being charged with driving while impaired and produced 75 other traffic citations.
Capt. Floyd Thomas of the Pinehurst Police Department called the checkpoint a success, though he would have liked to catch more drunk drivers.
"I think it was very successful," he said by phone Thursday. "It lets people know that we're out there and making these checks."
The state provided a "batmobile" or mobile breath analyzing vehicle for the event. The motorcoach has three portable breath analysis units in it.
Thomas said that law enforcement agencies will set up one checkpoint a month in various parts of the county to continue to crack down on drunk driving.
