A Greenville man died in a traffic accident late Thursday night on U.S. 1 North in Southern Pines when his vehicle flipped several times after running off the road.

Timothy Lee Ford, 60, was driving a 2000 Lincoln sport utility vehicle, which left the shoulder of the road, struck a culvert and then flipped four times before coming to rest in the median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened about 11:50 p.m. between the West Pennsylvania Avenue overpass and the Midland Road exit.

U.S. 1 was closed in both directions for three hours before being reopened, according to a release from the Southern Pines Police Department.

The department's Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the wreck. Anyone who witnessed the wreck or has any information about the vehicle's operation before the wreck is asked to contact the Police Department at 692-2732.
