O'Neal graduate Leah Kelly and Union Pines alum Cait Clendenin will be in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on Monday for the ACC Rowing Championships.
Both sophomores, Kelly is at Clemson University, and Clendenin rows for the University of North Carolina under Tar Heel Coach Sarah Haney, a Pinecrest grad.
Kelly was honored as Clemson's Novice Rower of the Year as a freshman last season. Now a member of the varsity squad, she has rowed with both the varsity eight and second varsity eight crews this spring.
In late March, she competed for the Tigers at the PAC 10 Rowing Challenge held in Redwood Shores, Calif. During a home meet at Lake Hartwell two weeks ago, Kelly rowed with the varsity eight in a 2,000 meter race the crew won against Old Dominion.
The communications studies major from Pinehurst was the captain of the O'Neal volleyball team as a senior. She also played basketball and soccer for the Falcons.
Clemson coach Richard Ruggieri describes Kelly as an excellent rower and a fantastic teammate.
"Leah came to Clemson with no experience, yet had an excellent athletic background in volleyball," the Tigers' coach says. "From there she continued to work hard both in strength and technique. Ultimately, she has become a serious candidate for the varsity eight which is currently ranked eighth in the nation. I could not be more pleased with her decision to represent Clemson."
Haney captained the volleyball, basketball and softball teams, and played on a state championship volleyball team while at Pinecrest. She was the captain of the UNC club rowing team in 1996 and 1997, and helped it achieve varsity status after her graduation. She has been the program's head coach since 2002.
A journalism and sociology major, Clendenin is from Whispering Pines and played basketball at Union Pines. She moved up to the varsity after rowing for the novice squad last season. She was a member of the novice eight that took first at the Knecht Cup and finished third at the ACC Championships.
Wrapping up an outstanding track career at UNC-Wilmington is Pinecrest graduate Shayne Moore of Southern Pines. In last weekend's Chanticleer Classic at Coastal Carolina, she finished second in both the 100 meter (12.05) and 200 meter (25.11) dashes. The former Patriot was also a member of the first place 400 meter relay quartet.
Moore tied the Seahawk record in the 100 (11.87) as a sophomore. She is expected to be one of the point producers for her team in this weekend's Colonial Athletic Association Championship meet held at Towson University.
Another former O'Neal athlete, Kathryn Maples, has earned Conference USA South second team honors as a member of the tennis team at Meredith College.
The junior merchandising major from Pinehurst teamed up with Morgan Martin to compile a doubles record of 12-3. In singles, Maples was 6-0 in the conference and 12-2 overall. In her senior year at O'Neal, she played on the Falcon's NCISAA 2A state champion girl' soccer team.
