A one-vehicle wreck Thursday night on U.S. 1 North, in the area of West Pennsylvania Avenue off-ramp, resulted in a death of the driver.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m., according to a release from the Southern Pines Police Department. The name of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The vehicle left the shoulder of the road and overturned in the median. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. U.S. 1 was closed in both directions for several hours.

The Southern Pines Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the wreck. Witnesses to the wreck or anyone with information regarding the vehicle operation before the wreck is asked to contact the Southern Pines Police Department at (910) 692-2732.
