The Sunrise Theater presents the award-winning film, "Che (Part 1)," starring Benicio Del Toro and directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic and Oceans Eleven) through Sunday, April 20.

"Che" is a two-part film sequence. The second part is scheduled for release in February 2010. Del Toro's performance in the title role won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

The film also stars Demian Bichir, Santiago Cabrera, Elvira Minguez, and Jorge Perugorria.

The film's official Web site summarizes the movie as follows:

"'Che' Guevara, is an Argentine doctor who shares a common goal with Fidel Castro, to overthrow the corrupt dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Che proves indispensable as a fighter, and quickly grasps the art of guerrilla warfare.

"As he throws himself into the struggle, Che is embraced by his comrades and the Cuban people."

This first part tracks the charismatic revolutionary as he joins Fidel Castro's band of Cuban exiles and journeys to the island on a leaky boat in 1956.

From these humble beginnings, the small team of rebels mobilizes popular support and recruits an army which will ultimately topple the U.S.-friendly regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista, while Che himself undergoes a transition from a simple doctor to one of the most iconic political figures of the modern age.

The historical Sunrise Theater is located at 250 NW Broad Street in Southern Pines. Tickets for the evening shows are $7 for adults, $6 for matinees. The film is rated R and runs for two hours.

Matinees are at 2:30 on Saturday and Sunday and each evening at 7:30. Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available.

All Sunrise Theater movies are commercial-free.
