Greenville Man Dies in Wreck on U.S. 1

A Greenville man died in a one-vehicle wreck Thursday night on U.S. 1 North, between the West Pennsylvania Avenue overpass and the Midland Road exit, when his SUV flipped several times after running off the side of the road.

Timothy Lee Ford, 60, of Greenville, died when the 2000 Lincoln SUV he was driving left the shoulder of the road, struck a culvert and then flipped approximately four times before coming to rest in the median. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The wreck occurred at approximately 11:50 p.m., with U.S. 1 being closed in both directions for approximately three hours before being reopened, according to a release from the Southern Pines Police Department.

The Southern Pines Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the wreck. Witnesses to the wreck or anyone with information regarding the vehicle operation before the wreck is asked to contact the Southern Pines Police Department at (910) 692-2732.
