The Sandhills CC men's golf team is making a strong bid to make the National Junior College Association of America's national tournament.

The Flyers entered Tuesday's final round of the Region tournament tied for first place with Louisburg CC at 323.

Flyer golfer Chris Horn fired a 1-over 73 at the Johnston County Country Club in Smithfield, N.C., to earn medalist honors entering the final round.

If the team wins, it advances to the Nationals, which will be held June 1-5 in New York. If the team falters, Horn can advance as an individual if he wins medalist honors.

In addition to Horn, Andrew Weis (81), Lincoln Jackson (84) and Nathan Phillips (85) were the top four scorers for the Flyers. The team is coach by Gus Ulrich.

Results for the final round of the tournament were not available by press time.

This is the first year for golf at Sandhills CC. They brought back athletics this year for the first time since the 1980s.

The Flyers played volleyball and basketball in the fall and men's and women's golf this spring.
