The Moore County Grand Jury on Monday indicted five suspects in connection with a street-corner shooting in Robbins that took the life of a teenager.

Tomas Pedro Pascual, 18, died March 31 after being shot with a rifle while standing with friends on the corner across from Tabernacle Methodist Church.

The Grand Jury indicted Michael Lee Stidham Jr., 18, of 4596 Spies Road in Star for first-degree murder; and Briant Andrew McKinney, 16, of 475 Hemp St. in Robbins, for murder. McKinney's brother, 17-year-old Trae Bradley McKinney and their mother and stepfather, Tara Lynette Reynolds, 34, and Benjamin Allen Reynolds, III, 35, all of the same Robbins address, were indicted on charges of being accessories after the fact.

The indictments say each of the three "unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did become an accessory after the fact to the felony of murder that was committed by (McKinney and/or Stidham) in that the defendant, knowing that Briant McKinney and/or Michael Lee Stidham Jr., had committed that felony, did knowingly assist that person in attempting to escape and in escaping detection, arrest, and punishment, by hiding the rifle."

Robbins Police Chief Jeff Sheffield said he testified before the Grand Jury. Proceedings of a Grand Jury are kept secret.

There are other officers in the police department in Robbins, but Sheffield is pretty much handling the entire investigation.

"I've had to do most of it myself," Sheffield said. "I am the one who has the experience."

At last Thursday's meeting of town commissioners, Mayor Theron Bell presented a plaque to Sheffield in recognition of the town's appreciation of his work responding to the shooting.

Sheffield put in more than a 24-hour day, working the case all night until he could book the suspects at the jail the next morning, then spending the rest of the day in Chapel Hill at the office of the state medical examiner for the autopsy.

The board also recognized the town volunteer fire department and Robbins Rescue Squad for their assistance to Sheffield and thanked Sheriff Lane Carter for his assistance.
