Cut Cable Doesn't Affect County

An AT&T fiber-optic cable accident apparently had little effect on telephone and Internet connections in Moore County Tuesday.

Personnel in the Moore County Clerk of Court office and the office of District Attorney Maureen Kreuger said they had encountered no problems.

"We're one of the few still up and running. Everything has been fine for us," said a spokesman for Clerk of Court Susan Hicks.

State officials reported that telephone and data systems in courthouses and county offices in all 100 counties were knocked out when the fiber-optic cable was severed at about 8:30 a.m. in Chapel Hill. Repairs were under way but systems were not expected to be fully operational until 6 p.m.

Moore County offices were not notified of the accident. Both Megan Owrey, clerk to the Board of Commissioners, and Darlene Yudell, information technology director, said they were unaware of any problems affecting Internet and e-mail connections or telephone service. The county's Internet providers are Time-Warner and Embarq.

Hardest hit were state offices in Raleigh and Wake County Courthouse offices. The state Administrative Office of the Courts reported intermittent service interruptions affecting the mainframe and server-based applications for the state court system.
