Blue Passes

Shaneiqua Blue, a graduate of Pinckney Academy's cosmetology program, passed her State Board of Cosmetology exam recently.

Blue will work her apprenticeship at Total Essence Beauty Salon in Carthage.

Last year Pinckney Academy's program, under instructor Patricia Cheek, had four students to test and all passed both theory and practical state tests. The practical test, which requires many performances, is done in Raleigh. The theory test is based on scientific concepts as well as hair, skin and nail care and services and is done in Board-selected locations.

Presentation

Union Pines High offers a presentation on Internet safety.

Parents of students at all grade levels are invited to a presentation titled, "Protecting Kids and Teens Online and Internet Safety: What You Don't Know Can Hurt Your Child," at Union Pines High School from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28. The event takes place in the school auditorium.

Topics covered in the presentation will include "How do you stop online harassment?," "What problems are encountered when student pictures are posted online?," and "Do you know what your child is doing on the Internet?"

The presenter will be Union Pines High guidance counselor Renee Green.

Students Accepted

Elise eighth-graders Karina Reynosa and Adam Bullard have been accepted to the prestigious East Carolina Legislators' School for Youth Leadership Development. The Legislators' School is designed to enhance the skills and abilities of its participants through structured learning activities.

Over a one-week period, students participate in a wide range of campus-based communication, decision-making, and critical thinking workshops, as well as numerous outdoor problem-solving exercises. These activities are intended to prepare young adults for leadership roles in their schools and communities in North Carolina. The Legislators' School is designed to be challenging, exciting, mentally stimulating, and, most of all, fun.

The Legislators' School for Youth Leadership Development School offers a leadership program for talented middle and high school students. It is an honor to be nominated by the student's school. The School will be held June 23-29, on the campus of East Carolina University. The North Carolina General Assembly has funded scholarships for approximately 150 middle and high school students to attend the summer program.

Karina is the daughter of Maria C. Gonzales and Gabriel Reynosa of Robbins.

Adam is the son of Grayland Bullard and Dawn Whitaker, who reside outside Robbins.

Science Fair

David McInnis represented West Pine Middle School and Moore County at this year's State Science and Engineering Fair held Saturday, March 28.

He was awarded second place and $100 in cash by the North Carolina American Water Works Association for his research titled "How Does Human Interaction Affect Our Creeks and Rivers?"
