Vikings Softball On a Roll

The Lady Vikings picked up back-to-back victories on Monday and Tuesday, thanks in large part to a recent Union Pines' power surge spurred by sluggers Ebony Walker and Chelsey Hardy.

After defeating 4A Lee County 9-7 in Cameron, the Vikes overwhelmed the Overhills Lady Jaguars 19-3 on Tuesday. The game with the Jaguars lasted only five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Against Overhills the Vikes banged out 18 hits and scored 12 runs in the last two innings.

Walker, who went 2-4 with a homer and 2 RBIs in the game, has been the most consistent run producer all season long, according to head coach Randy Calcutt.

"This year I have really improved in the power department because I have gotten much stronger physically," Walker said, "so it has boosted my confidence. It really feels great to know I am helping the team out as much as I can."

Hardy missed several of Union Pines' early season games due to an injury. She drove in three runs, scored three times and had four hits, including two triples.

"This was a big win for our morale as team," she said, "especially coming fresh off a strong victory over Lee County. This is a good feeling and it has us pumped up, so I think things will keep improving for us as the season continues as we use this momentum to play better ball."

With the victory against Overhills, Union Pines is now 2-6 in CFV competition and 4-10 overall.

Viking pitcher Megan Thompson got the win, allowing just one earned run and four hits as Union Pines completed the season series sweep over the Jags.

"We played really well over the last two games," Thompson said, "with strong defense and great backup support from our offense. Everything really came together for us tonight, and when we play like that we feel we have a chance in any game."

Union Pines had several batters with big games on Tuesday. Courtney Voss had two hits, Megan Barker had three hits and three RBIs and Megan Smith also had three RBIs.

The Vikings played CFV rival Gray's Creek Thursday at Cameron. Union Pines' next contest is after the school's spring break, when the Lady Vikes battle the Southern Lee Cavaliers on April 21.
