SPORTS BRIEFS: O'Neal Soccer Team Remains Undefeated

The O'Neal girls soccer team continued its unbeaten season with a pair of conference wins.
The Falcons defeated Fayetteville Christian, 1-0 on April 1 and improved to 3-0 with a 7-0 home triumph Tuesday against Harrells Christian Academy.
Senior forward Syd McIlwain scored the lone goal against Fayetteville Christian and added three more Against Harrells.
Against HCA, Jackie Chamberlain added two goals and Maggie Davis had a goal and two assists.
Goalie Cristina Morcom and the Falcon defense have not allowed a goal this season. Morcom made seven saves combined in the two conference games.
PHS Golfers Win, Tighten Grip on Conference
The Pinecrest boys' golf team is solidly entrenched in first place in the Mid-Southeastern Conference after winning its fifth consecutve match at Scotch Meadows on Wednesday.
Austin Dunlap and Sam Packard each shot a round of 75 for the Patriots to share medalist honors with Matt Ritch of Scotland County. Pete Lineberger finished with a 76 and Bryan Stewart carded a 77 to complete the Patriot team score of 303.
The other team scores were Jack Britt 323, Richmond Senior 341, Scotland 342, Hoke County 390 and Douglas Byrd 431. The match had been postponed from Monday because of a tornado watch in Scotland County.
The remaining league matches are scheduled for a week from Monday (April 20) at Stryker Golf course and the following week at Pinehurst No. 1.
"I cannot believe this season is coming to a close," Sandy Sackmann, coach of the defending 4A state champion Pinecrest squad says. "I have been so impressed with this team and their desire to win and have another chance at the states. I cannot say enough about all of them. They know what they need to do to get there."
On Tuesday, Pinecrest defeated Apex by two strokes in a non-conference match held at MacGregor Downs Country Club. Lineberger, Dunlap, Stewart and Matt Forbis each shot a 75 for the Patriots.The medalist was John Connors of Apex with a 73.
Packard, Stewart, Lineberger, Forbis and Colin Jameson will represent Pinecrest at a CGA junior invitational tournament to be held at Treyburn Country Club in Durham on Monday.
Pats Soccer Remains Unbeaten In Conference
The Pinecrest girls defeated Seventy-First 10-0 in a home soccer match played on Monday.
The Patriots, 8-3 overall, have completed the first half of their Mid-Southeastern Conference schedule with a record of 7-0. Jack Britt is in second place at 7-1.
Wednesday's home match against Douglas Byrd was postponed to a date still to be dtermined at the request of the Eagles. The Patriots were scheduled to meet Lumberton in a home non-league contest on Thursday.
Lyndsey Anderson and Sarah Senior each scored a pair of goals against the Falcons. Others finding the net were Kate Hieronymus, Bailey Pages, Rachel Dokich, Shannon Potter, Lauren Corrigan and Antonia Meyers. Hieronymus, Senior and Cary Keegan were credited with assists.
Pinecrest has outscored conference opponents 62-4 while posting four shutouts.
Southern Middle Wins Opener
Southern Middle School opened its baseball season with a 65 victory over Elise Middle School in an exciting battle that went down to the wire. Elise began the attack with a first inning one-out double down the first base line by Josh Lambert followed by a single from J. Allred and A. Bullard scoring Lambert for the first score of the game.
Southern Middle was unsuccessful in the bottom half of the first getting a lone double from Tristan Helms.
Southern Middle took over the lead in the second inning, leading off with a walk from Dylan Campbell. With two out and bases loaded after additional walks by Greg Mello and Ryan Smith, Matthew Lacher hit a single scoring Campbell. With bases loaded again after Charles Woodard draws a walk, Tristan Helms hit a long single to score both Mello and Smith to take the lead 3 to 1.
Elise scored another run in the fourth inning by T. Ross on a passed ball.
Southern Middle scored again in the fifth inning after Charles Woodard drew a walk and is batted in by Tristan Helms' double.
Elise Middle took the lead 5-4 in the top of the sixth by scoring 3 runs by C. Vaughn, E. Morrison, and T. Ross on errors that plagued the Southern Middle school squad.
Down 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh and last inning, Tristan Helms hit a one-out double and is scored on a single from Ryan Bender to even the score. Dylan Campbell drew a walk moving Bender to second and stealing on a passed ball moved him to third. Tommy Baggett, entered the game for injured Tyler Coe at first, hit a game winning single to score Bender for the 6-5 victory.
Elise used three pitchers in the contest, Vaughn, Allred, and Lambert, to strike out 10 Southern Middle batters and walking only seven.
Tristan Helms was on the mound for Southern Middle pitching a complete game throwing 114 pitches while striking out 12 batters, walking three and allowing only four hits.
Pats Finish Second Against Championship Field
Four of the most decorated high school boys' golf programs in the Carolinas got more than they bargained for at the challenging Pinehurst No. 4 layout on Thursday afternoon.
Green Hope, the 2006 and 2007 4A state champion finished first with a team score of 306 on the rainy afternoon. Pinecrest, the defending 4A state champion finished in a tie for second with a 312 total led by Austin Dunlap with a round of 75. The other scores for Coach Sandy Sackmann's squad were a 77 by Sam Packard, a 78 by Bryan Stewart and an 83 by Colin Jameson. Pete Lineberger was unable to complete his round because of darkness.
Also at 312 was A.C. Flora of Columbia, S.C., the 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008 3A champion in its state. Broughton, the 4A titleholder in North Carolina from 1998-2002 , and again in 2004, finished fourth at 323.
Thursday's play was in its sixth hour when darkness brought it to a close. For the North Carolina teams it was a chance to play on the course that will be the site for this year's state tournament on May 11 and 12.
"The conditions were miserable," Sackmann said, "but we need to play good competition on that course to prepare for states. I was pleased with our scores because it lets us know what we have to have for states.
"The players were constantly trying to keep grips and gloves dry -- an impossible task. Some of the greens were difficult to putt because of the rain, but it was good to see how they handled the conditions. I was proud of them -- no complaining -- just trudging forward and doing thier best."
Pinecrest returns to conference play on Monday with a match at Scotch Meadows.
PHS Girls' Soccer Blasts Westover
The Pinecrest girls romped to a 10-0 victory in a girls' soccer game played at the John Williams Athletic Complex on Wednesday.
Eight different players scored the goals as the Patriots won their sixth match in a row. They improved to 6-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 7-3 overall while Westover dropped to 0-6 and 0-8.
Bailey Pages and Lauren Corrigan each scored twice for the home team. Others finding the back of the net were Sarah Dejak, Lyndsey Anderson, Kate Hieronymus, Rachel Dokich, Beth Hieronymus and Keegan Cary. Dokich (2), Anderson, Pages and Antonia Meyers were credited with assists.
Pinecrest will complete the first half of league play with a 7 p.m. home match against Seventy-First on Monday.
Conference standings: Pinecrest 6-0, Scotland County 5-1, Jack Britt 5-1, Hoke County 3-3, Richmond Senior 3-3, Seventy-First 2-4, Douglas Byrd 0-6, Westover 0-6.
South Jonston Tops Vikes' Nine
For the third time in its last five Cape Fear Valley contests, the Union Pines Viking baseball team let a late led slip away as they fell to the South Johnston Trojans 5-3 Tuesday night in Cameron.
Thanks to a two-run homer by Vike designated hitter Clark Stout, the Vikes took a 3-1 lead after four innings of play. However, with Union Pines' starting hurler Adam Harward's pitch count fast approaching ninety on the night, South Johnston (3-3, 5-5) plated four runs on two hits and a Vike error in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Union Pines stranded five runners stranded in scoring position over the last three innings, including loading the bases with one out in the seventh. Trojan pitcher Andrew Carol recored the final two outs on a strikeout and a ground out to earn the save.
Adam Harward took the loss. He was the only Viking with multiple hits in the game, recording a single, double and a run scored.
The Vikes feel to 1-5 in CFV play with the loss and 2-7 overall.
Netters Seek Lady Hoopsters
The Netters basketball team out of Southern Pines is looking for females age 60 and over to join them. The team competes in the Southern Pines Recreation league and in the Senior Games. Interested participants are asked to attend practice at 6 p.m. Monday at the Westmoore Elementary gym.
