In the recent tragedy in Carthage much attention and accolades have been given to Officer Justin Garner of the Carthage Police Department, and deservedly so.

Garner went into a dangerous situation alone and ended what could have been an even worse event. He deserves recognition for a job well done.

I wish to honor also the staff of Pinelake Rehab for going above and behind their duties in protecting their patients. One man, Jerry Avant, should be recognized for going above the call of duty in protecting his patients. In doing so, he sacrificed his own life so others would survive this terrible event.

I never met Jerry Avant in person, but I wish I had. His personal sacrifice will never be forgotten, and I consider him a true American hero.
