ChathamArts premier spring event ClydeFEST, celebrating the life and work of the world-renowned Outsider Folk Artist and Critter Master Clyde Jones of Bynum, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Bynum Ball Field.

For many years Jones has charmed and delighted his admirers from all over the world as he unleashes his fantastic "Critters" from cedar logs using only his trusty Stihl chainsaw, a few big nails and the odd plastic flower or old shoe.

Inspired by Jones' own motto, "It's all about the children," this fun-for-all-ages event features clever games, whimsical art, yummy eats, and good time music and entertainment.

"This year, we are partnering with Bynum Front Porch in order to bring more local bands doing cool music for kids, as well as, local schools to create a Clyde Critter-inspired art gallery," says a spokesman.

The highlight of the 2008 event was getting to watch Clyde ply his trade.

"Come and see what Clyde is going to craft this year," says the spokesman.

"The Critter he creates will be auctioned off on the spot to benefit ChathamArts initiatives and programs. This is your chance to own your very own Clyde Jones' Critter."

An added highlight to look forward to at the 2009 ClydeFEST is the partnership with the Immaculate Baking Company. This baking company, based in Asheville, has its roots deep in local folk art. They will be in Chatham County making cookies with us using cookie cutters based on Clyde's Critters.
