Richard L. Mattocks, 75, of Southern Pines, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at his home.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Grady Perryman and the Rev. Cynthia Strickland.
He was born Dec. 15, 1933, in Eagle Springs. He graduated from Southern Pines High School in 1952 and married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Bailey, in 1952.
Richard opened Sir Richard's Ltd., an upscale men's clothing store, in 1966. While operating his men's store, he leased the clothing section of the Whispering Pines pro shop and operated it as Sir Richard's Village shop until the club was sold about 15 years later. He bought Irene's, a ladies clothing shop located next to his men's store. He also had the first pro shop at Lake Surf, which is now Woodlake Country Club.
During his career, Richard served on the board of directors of the Carolinas-Virginia Clothiers, and was a vice president when he closed his stores in 1990. He served on the board of Southern Pines' first Chamber of Commerce and was its chairman of the year in 1969. Richard was also a board member of the early Jaycees and was voted "Boss of the Year" by that organization in 1980. He was a life member of the Elks.
Richard was one of the founding members of the Southern Pines Merchants Association and served a term as its president. After closing his business in 1990, he went to work for Gentlemen's Corner in Pinehurst, where he worked for 18 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruth Mattocks, and an older brother, Thomas "Shag" Mattocks.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret; two daughters, Nonie Mattocks, of Vass, Lynne Lucas and her husband, Wade, of Raleigh; three granddaughters, Stephanie Melton, of Vass, Erin Lucas and Bailey Lucas, of Raleigh; one great-grandson, Richard Wade Melton, of Vass; and one brother, Gary Mattocks, of Southern Pines.
