Aberdeen Elementary School's playground requires updating. The land needs to be leveled, wood chips are necessary and equipment needs to be more age-appropriate and safer for over 300 children. State and federal funding is being cut in many areas of education.
This is a Title I school, which means there are many low-income families. To this end, the school is having a Spring Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show on May 2. All proceeds will go to updating the playground.
Teachers, assistants, custodians and staff are working without pay all day Saturday, May 2. The staff is also baking for a bake sale to provide additional money for the playground fund. Banners were donated by Coca-Cola and hung on the school property. (The town of Aberdeen is now charging the school $100 to display those banners.)
The playground will benefit the community and all children. The playground is not a for-profit business venture. As the ad in The Pilot on April 5 states, "Proceeds go directly to our playground fund." If all school employees can work one Saturday to make a dream come true for children, shame on the town of Aberdeen for taking money from the children.
