Glenace Cecelia Mitros died peacefully at her home in Pinehurst Sunday, April 5, 2009.
A memorial service will be held Monday, April 13, at 11 a.m. at Community Congregational Church in Southern Pines.
Glenace Cecelia Mitros, also known as "Ace," was "one hell of a woman." She was born to Myron and Martha Ames in Maine, Wis., on July 26, 1929. She became an X-ray technician, training in Milwaukee, Wis., and working for three years in Denver, Colo. She returned to Shiocton, Wis., due to her father's illness and later moved to Chicago, Ill., where she was trained as an EEG technician and worked for a pioneer of EEG, Dr. Frederic Gibbs.
While living in Chicago, Glenace braved a blind date that would forever alter her destiny and on May 17, 1958, she married George N. Mitros, inheriting two stepchildren, Nick and Michele, who drove her to at least two memorable out-of-character acts: chasing one around the house with a broom and hitting the other with a wet noodle -- not once relinquishing her inherent dignity.
Glenace lovingly cared for her husband, George, who succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer's disease which ended in his death in April 2004, a sad and difficult ending to a beautiful relationship. In memory of George, Glenace reconstructed the Memory Garden at the Community Congregational Church, Southern Pines, where her ashes will be laid to rest alongside his.
In addition to her husband, George, Glenace was predeceased by her sister, Joyce Kasten.
She is survived by her sister, Ardys Kurey. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Susan Kurey, Doris Krueger, Michael Kurey, Vance Cope-Kasten, Vickie Lembke, Stephen Kasten, Katie Matthies, Rick Karolczak and Rob Karolczak; her sister-in-law, Angie Karolczak and husband, Dick; her stepson, Nick Mitros and wife, Martha; her stepdaughter Michele Mitros and her son, Brook, and a host of loving friends.
We miss you dearly and will carry you always in our hearts, Glennie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Community Congregational Church, 141 North Bennett Street, Southern Pines, NC 28387 or Community Home Care & Hospice, 685 South Bennett Street, Southern Pines, NC 28387.
Glenace herself wished to acknowledge and thank Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Jordan, dear friends since 1990, and Luellen Sorget, for singing during the memorial service.
Finally, the family of Glenace Mitros would like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to the loving friends and caretakers who gave so much during Glennie's illness.
"The memory of a good person is a blessing." (Paraphrase of Proverbs 10:7.)
