For the third time in its last five Cape Fear Valley contests, the Union Pines Viking baseball team let a late led slip away as they fell to the South Johnston Trojans 5-3 Tuesday night in Cameron.
Thanks to a two-run homer by Vike designated hitter Clark Stout, the Vikes took a 3-1 lead after four innings of play. However, with Union Pines' starting hurler Adam Harward's pitch count fast approaching ninety on the night, South Johnston (3-3, 5-5) plated four runs on two hits and a Vike error in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Union Pines stranded five runners stranded in scoring position over the last three innings, including loading the bases with one out in the seventh. Trojan pitcher Andrew Carol recored the final two outs on a strikeout and a ground out to earn the save.
Adam Harward took the loss. He was the only Viking with multiple hits in the game, recording a single, double and a run scored.
The Vikes feel to 1-5 in CFV play with the loss and 2-7 overall.
